What is the purpose of evangelism?

Evangelism is the activity of spreading a religious faith, or attempting to convert people to a religious faith. Evangelism is generally synonymous with missionary work, but is not always used for proselytizing. Some Christian denominations, such as the Catholic Church, consider evangelism a duty of all Christians, and evangelists may specialise in presenting the message to specific groups of people, especially non-Christians or non-believers.
