Pests may not seem like a major problem compared to the more immediate and dramatic effects of the flood, but they can create a tremendous problem in the aftermath of flooding. Pests can also be a problem in areas that are not flooded, as animals flee from flood areas. More than annoying, pests can spread disease, contaminate food and water, and cause property damage. That is why it is important to be aware of the risk of common pests and floods.
Pests That Come after the Floods:
Cockroaches
Humid, wet conditions draw cockroaches to homes in large groves, which is what makes them one of the most hated species of insects in the world. One of the largest types of cockroaches specifically thrives in flood-damaged areas, and that is the American cockroach. It can reach up to 2 inches in length, and it has fully functioning wings. This type of cockroach breeds very fast, which makes it difficult to control.
Rodents
During heavy rains, rodents may be flooded out of their dwellings and seek higher grounds and new shelter. Unfortunately, this can mean your home. Homes that are pier and beam, have lots of pipe penetrations, and overhanging tree branches can be an easy target for a rat or mouse's new shelter.
Fire Ants
Most ants have to get in early because they can't cross when the floodwaters come. By clinging together, they make a raft that floats in floodwaters, with the queen and larvae protected in the center. This raft can stay adrift for two whole weeks until they crash into a house which they can use for shelter.
