Steam coils are essential for heating large commercial and industrial spaces with significant heat loads. They operate by heating air or another type of gas as it moves across a bank of finned tubes. The steam, contained within these tubes, enters from a supply manifold, flows through the finned tubes, condenses into water, and drains out through the return pipe manifold.
Advantages of Using Steam Coils
Efficient Heat Transfer: Steam is the most effective heat transfer fluid due to its high heat of condensation, allowing it to carry substantial heat to the heat exchanger efficiently.
Easy Temperature Control: The steam's temperature and pressure are linked, making it easy to control the temperature by adjusting pressure valves.
Readily Available: Steam is generated from water, which is more accessible compared to other heat transfer fluids like refrigerants or oils.
Sustainable Process: Steam condenses into water within the heat exchanger and can be easily recycled back to the boiler for re-steaming.
Air, by contrast, does not heat as efficiently as steam. To compensate, fins are added to the outside of the tubes, increasing the surface area for better heat transfer from the metal to the air.
