Spiders are a part of everyday life here in Australia! These creepy-crawlies can come in all varieties. From big ones like the huntsman, to tiny little spiders like the white-tail, to dangerous or even deadly spiders like the funnel web. In order to help you navigate the dangerous landscape that is the aussie backyard, here is a list of the most dangerous spiders in australian homes and how dangerous they really are.
1. Sydney funnel-web
With highly toxic venom produced in large amounts and large fangs to inject it, the Sydney funnel-web is without a doubt the deadliest spider in Australia, and possibly the world. Found in New South Wales, in forests as well as populated urban areas, they burrow in humid sheltered places. They can wander in backyards and sometimes fall into swimming pools, and though they're not often encountered, they can be quite aggressive when threatened.
2. Redback spider
Redback spiders hide in sheltered dry places such as mailboxes and garden sheds. Most serious bites come from the female species. As their name suggests, red back spiders can be identified by the red stripe located on the back of their black body.
3. White tail spider
White tail spiders are hunters and wander about at night and can be found in natural and urban areas, preferring cool moist locations like garden mulch. They are generally dark red or grey with dark orange banded legs.
4. Mouse spider
Mouse spiders or Missulena sp. are generally found all over Australia. They live in burrows and near waterways or rivers and suburban areas. They are also one of the most deadliest and aggressive spiders in Australia.
5. Trap Door Spiders
Starting off our list is the Trap door species. Their venom is only mildly affective on humans, causing localised pain. They are so named for the burrow they make in the ground, with a “door”. The spiders are dangerous when children and adults are digging around in the garden unaware of the spiders.
