What are the signs of a failing idler pulley?

Engine idler pulleys guide and tension engine drive belts. Belts connecting various engine accessories, such as alternators, water pumps, power steering pumps, and AC compressors, are routed in a specific way. With the idler pulley, the engine belt can loop around another smoothly rotating point, resulting in the desired routing. Some engines have multiple idler pulleys, but most only have one tensioner pulley. If idler pulleys are not replaced, they will eventually wear out. A bad idler pulley will usually produce a few symptoms that can notify the driver of an issue.

1. Visibly worn pulleys

2. Belt squealing

3. Damaged bearing or pulley
