Here is a list of things to which ants have a different reaction than you might think.
Artificial Sweeteners
Like humans, ants require a mixture of proteins, carbohydrates and fats in their diets. Because sugar contains high amounts of carbohydrates, a number of different ant species are attracted to food items that contain sugar. Artificial sweeteners, however, do not contain these carbohydrates and as a result, do little to attract ants.
Water Or Moisture
Just as they can’t live without a good source of food, ants also need a water source to survive. Ants do not drink just to quench their immediate thirst. They also take water back to their colony to store it for future use. Therefore, when they find a good source of water, they will leave a scent trail to attract other ants, and they will all keep coming back for more. Broken pipes, roof leaks, potted plants, and even accumulated condensation can all be sources of moisture that are attractive to nearby ants. Opening a window or running a fan in the bathroom can help prevent a buildup of excess moisture that can attract ants.
Potted Flowers and Plants
Most ants that invade your home aren’t attracted to houseplants as a source of food, but rather the moisture that is associated with the soil the plants live in. Flowers that bloom may help to draw ants as a result of the sweet aroma of the blossoms. Aphids are also attracted to indoor plants and excrete a sugary substance known as honeydew that ants highly covet. Some ants care for and protect aphids as a means of having a steady supply of honeydew.
